I'm not the most experienced sewer, but would like to make some cute dresses for summer, Tunics, loungy pants & pj's --stuff like that.
I don't even know where to begin as far as patterns are concerned.
I want to know about foxy (& simple) patterns... recommended co's, pattern numbers, sources, whatever...
I want to start simple so I get in over my head and don't give up.
PS: My plus-size region is my bust. Thus, why I'd like to make my own stuff.
Thx in advance for any inspiration, leads or tips!

Re: Patterns
Tue, March 13, 2007 - 7:03 AMI like Simplicity for their patterns. They tend to run larger, are WAY easy to follow, and have a plethora of larger sizes that can be separated into tops and bottoms fairly easily. www.simplicity.com is a great resource to look at what's available. -

You most likely will buy a pettern bigger than the size dress you usually buy. Ignore the number! Many patterns come in mulit-size packages. Then you can cut the top by your bust size and taper to a smaller size for your waist and hips. I agree, Simplicity patterns are easy to start with. Many of them will say they're easy right on them! They mean it! -

Re: Patterns
Thu, March 15, 2007 - 9:23 AMOne thing about measuring. Measure your bust and your high bust which is in the armpits above the bust measurement. The above the bust measurement will tell you what size the shoulders need, which in cutting multisize patterns can be a real help. It will also help if you are on the pattern break, if you are a size 24-26 and the pattern runs 18-24 or 26-30 you may want to consider in your choice, if your bust is 26, but your shoulders are 20 you may want to get the smaller pattern for more fitted garments and jut add a little in the bust, but if your shoulders 24 and bust 28 you might want the larger pattern. Also use your hip measuement as a better guide for more fitted pants, and skirts. Taking in a waist band is generally easier than trying to piece together hips.

Re: Patterns
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 9:41 AMI have to agree about totally ignoring the sizes and go with the bust measurement - or what ever is your largest measurement. There is no rhyme or reason to sizing. -

Re: Patterns
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 4:26 PMActually, the only rhyme or reason is with the pattern companies! Clothing manufacturers make up their own sizing. Many times, if you pay more for something, you can buy a smaller size! -
