I have heard that it is wood pulp and I have heard that it is synthetic.
Is it breathable? Like Cotton and Linen?
2nd question (or 3rd): Would anyone recommend a Rayon&Linen blend for summer? Does body heat escape with this fabric?
Thanks

Re: Is Rayon a natural fabric?
Fri, June 9, 2006 - 5:25 AMrayon is a synthetic fabric and depending on the blend it can be very breathable... the usual blend is 65/35 with cotton... you should choose a light weight fabric... something under 4 oz... around 2.5 would prolly be best... depending on the quality of the rayon you can get it where it feels very near silk... when i am making special items on a budget i choose rayon -

Re: Is Rayon a natural fabric?
Fri, June 9, 2006 - 6:18 AMHere's what Wikipedia says:
Rayon is a synthetic filament fiber. It was the first artificial fiber to be produced. Rayon is the fiber that is produced from solublising cellulose. This can be done through nitration, to produce cellulose nitrate (or nitrocellulose), through reaction with acetic acid to produce cellulose acetate, or reaction with Scweitzer's reagent to produce a copper ion ligno-cellulose. All of these techniques involve partially substituting bulky groups onto the pyranose monomer units where there are hydroxy groups. This disperses the polymer and decreases intermolecular bonding, making it easier for solvents like water to enter. Once solvated, the polymer is extruded through small holes to produce the fiber, and bathed in sulphuric acid to effectively recrystallise it from solution. Today, most rayon is created by the viscose process. Wood pulp is mixed with concentrated sodium hydroxide, then reacted with carbon disulphide. The liquid solution is then pushed through holes in a device called a spinneret. As the liquid comes into contact with acid it solidifies into rayon fiber. Three common hole shapes in the spinneret determine the quality of the yarn: semi-dull, dull, or bright.
Rayon was originally named artificial silk or wood silk. The name rayon was created in 1924. Unlike nylon, rayon absorbs water, making it more comfortable to wear as a clothing textile.
As well as viscose rayon, there are other types such as anitrocellulose rayon, developed in 1891.

Re: Is Rayon a natural fabric?
Mon, June 12, 2006 - 3:13 PMHow do you buy something without actually touching it? With clothes you can send it back, but I wouldn't guess you could do that with fabric? -

Re: Is Rayon a natural fabric?
Tue, June 13, 2006 - 7:46 PMdenver fabrics has a swatch system where by you purchase a swatch of the material and get a "coupon" redemable for the price of the swatches... this way you are able to feel and see the material and decide on your purchase... this helped my fiance out considerablely since he found a color he loved in dupioni but once he saw the actual fabric decided that he didn't want the material... saved us about $60 by spending $5 on swatches... but when he did decide on a silk he liked, we were able to apply the price of the swatches we had purchased to the price of the silk and got what he wanted in the color he liked best for about $40 with shipping and handling... and the quality is excellant... -
