Just so we have an idea of what size/fitting issues we are addressing here, I hope no one is offended by my requesting a size roll call.

This could be useful in posting topics, tips, fitting, and especially the clothes swaps!

The older I get, the more my waist expands. Right now I'm 47"/41"/47" and wear a size 16/x-large. I cannot wear pants that rest on the waist though, 'cause if they fit my waist they are baggy on my hips and (flat) butt.
      Oh, 9 shoes.
I used to be a wee thing and weighed only 115 lbs. Then I could wear any shoes! Does anyone else here find it more difficult to wear high heels the older (and fatter) one becomes? I'm now reduced (ha ha) to Birks and sneakers.

Are you my twin? Wow! I run 16-18 top, 18-20 bottom, and 7 1/2 to 8 on shoes :o) How tall are you? I'm 4'11" :o)

    bust: 44
    chest: 40
    waist: 40
    hips: 44
    inseam: 29

In other words, short and curvy and increasingly pudgy. :sigh:

In clothes sizes, approximately size 16-18 or so.

Size: 16-20 (can't they make sizes more standard?!)
      Shoes: 6.5

        Amen!!

        18 pants
        16 tops

But that's a real generalization! I never know unless I try things on, and patterns are a bigger nightmare!

sizes/measurements are approximates... I really haven't measured in a long time.

    bust: 76" (yes, inches)
    waist: 50"
    hips: 70"
    inseam: 28" (I think)
shoe: 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 and WIDE, depending on the style,
usually closer to 8 1/2 most of the time
bra: 56KKK++ (but I usually settle for as close as I
can get and just have to deal with a bad fit and/or
    overflow)
    sizes: 6X, 64+ or thereabouts

    20 tops
    22 pants/skirts
    8.5 W to 9 M shoes
    5'3"

I really have trouble finding really great shoes. Does anyone have a good source for hip shoes in wide sizes? Possibly in the Bay Area?
    • Re: Size roll call

      Sat, August 21, 2004 - 10:16 PM
      I am 5'4"
depending on the shirt and the cut I can wear an 18/20 or a 22/24
Pants and Skirts are a the same 18/20 or 22/24
shoes 7.5 if its sneakers otherwise and 8.5 or a 9

      Bout the same size here...
      18-20 top, approx 42C bra
20-22 bottom with the infamous "Oakland Booty"
Prefer a 34-36" corset, and my inseam about 31"
      I'm about 5'6" tall

Shoes will be anywhere from 8.5W to 9.5 depending on style and heel height. Boots are tricky coz they usually don't fit my calves.

      >>I really have trouble finding really great shoes. Does anyone have a good source for hip shoes in wide sizes? Possibly in the Bay Area?

Nordstrom.com has a search by size, IIRC, but if you're limited in budget hit up Nordstrom Rack. (There's a Rack in SF and in San Leandro.) Newport News (newport-news.com) also has wide sizes and a good selection. If you're cheap like me than you already know about Payless. =^_^=

      Love, Mama.

I spent 2 weekends looking for a pair of simple black boots! All the boots were too tight in the calf, except for a boot for fat girls....and that was
          h-u-g-e. Damn, it was horrible.
I finally bought Frye boots...Campus style. They are a little '70s, but comfortable and will look good with skirts.

Jeans - 26 Average - according to Lane Bryant
          Shoe 9 to 10, (eur 41 fit's the best)

for patterns I buy the largest size they have for what ever it is I want and work from there.

hmmm...lemme see...where is that stupid measuring tape? ;->
    I wear a 20 to 24...
    5'2.5"
    Bust 52" or a 42DDD
    Waist 47"
    Hips 58"
    Shoe 6 1/2 to 7
things are usually too wrong for me to buy off rack...if it fits in the bust it will be too long in the arms. if it fits in th butt/hips the waist is too big...why I learned to sew in the first place is even when i was thin i had at least 10 to 12 inches between my waist and my bust/hips...sigh.

Hey Ladykins - did you know that Nordstrom's Rack has women's shoes sometimes up to size 14? My mama is tall like us, and wears a 13-1/2 and has always had a terrible time finding shoes. They are pretty reasonable too, and actually only about half of them look like Drag Queen Shoes (you know the kind I mean, the size 14 triple-wide tiger-striped diamond-encrusted 6-inch stiletto-heeled stuff? Unless that's what you're looking for, they have those too!) She's found running shoes and flats and mules and heels there. Just thought I'd pass it along. :)

Fantastic!! I didn't know, I assumed up to a twelve as usual. Payless has 13w at some locations, though usually not in the "wow, you got that at Payless?!" styles, and I don't always feel like wearing plastic shoes...Thanks for telling me, I can't wait to check it out!

I am a womens size 1x to 2x shirts (button ups have to be 2x to button correctly and not gape open around the buttons, but then they are too big everywhere else....)
about womens 18-22 pants. Inseams are a huge problem, I am a 31" inseam. Now where on earth do I find that?!!? 30 looks funny and 32 is way to long and I can't hem ready to wear pants worth doo-doo.
size 10 shoes unless they are backless, then sometimes I can go all the way down to an 8.5
I found that sizes vary so drastically Regular department store size 18 is sometimes too small, but the other day I bought some pants at The Gap and went with a 20, and they are too big so far (havent washed them yet)

      size 10 shoes

size 9 ring, but not like anyone is asking, HA!

Heidi, we sound kind of the same, so here are some ideas . . . I get my jeans from Target (Blu), other pants from Silhouettes. Shoes from Zappos because they have a great return policy and fun stuff from Kiyonna. Let me know if these don't help -- I can pick my brain some more.

    speaking of size

what do you all think of this new sizing thingy that has size 12 as a plus size
    WTF!!!???

I remember being a size 12 and being ALL THAT!
In the words of Patsy Stone "soon they'll be chucking a fetus down the runway in heels and a hat"
    • Re: Size roll call

      Sat, July 16, 2005 - 7:46 AM
i am sure you are great looking at any size! however, i think that plus size vs "regular" size has to do with the amount of fabric in the waistband, etc. so, just as a 16 is different than a 16 plus, then a 12 would be differen than a 12 plus.

as a sewist, i am sure you are aware that plus size is not just that the numbers go higher, but that they are cut more generously in the most-likely padded areas.

regarding fitting, most plus sizes are more generous because fat cells are larger than lean muscle cells. that is, a size 4 skeleton with extra fat bringing her up to a size 12 is going to need more generous clothes than a 10 skeleton with extra fat bringing her up to a size 12. in the first case, she might get away with wearing a regular size 14 or 16, but a plus 12 might fit best. in the second case, the extra 10 pounds that are raising her to a size 12 are factored into the 12 and they will fit her better than a plus 12.

i think that what the fashion industry is saying is that they know and respect all this. that is, not all 12s are created equal, and it is time that the fashion indistry provided size 12s of all varieties with decently fitting clothes.

I really like this thread. This is my first post in this group. My names Flower and I'm from Orange County, California.
I love clothing swaps. I do a swap with S.A.F.E. (size acceptance for empowerment) every year. They are a great size acceptance group that's been around for years and years based out of whittier, california. I will certainly keep you gals posted when we have another one. www.safe4women.com

My size is a nice full 30/32
I can do 4x but prefer 5x and of course still sport the cute old 3x tees from my closet's past
my bra is a hard to find 52F
and my shoes are a dainty 10 or 11

I'm a super sized plus size chick and seriously pear shaped.

    5' 6" Tall
    51" bust
    48" waist
    69" hips\belly\bum

Buying cloths off the rack is horribly expensive. I'm only 31 and prefer a hippy or fairy goth sort of style. Too much of what you can buy off the rack looks like old lady cloths(no offense to any older ladies.) It's especially impossible for me to buy one piece outfits. If it fits around the biggest part of my body it's to big for my top. It's very frustrating.
