Re: I tore the fly on my favorite pair of jeans
Thu, August 17, 2006 - 3:46 PMThat depends on a couple things. First, when you say "tore" does that mean fabric ripped, or a seam came loose. If a seam came loose and you can see how it goes back together, go for it. The other things to consider is your comfort with sewing. If you've put in a zipper before, and feel okay about it, go for it. If, one the other hand, you've ripped fabric and/or feel uncomfortable with sewing zippers, take it to a professional. -

Thu, August 17, 2006 - 3:47 PMStretch denim isn't that hard to work with. That shouldn't factor in.

Re: I tore the fly on my favorite pair of jeans
Fri, August 18, 2006 - 5:28 AMokay... if the fabric of the zipper is torn, teeth on the zipper broke or the pull came loose from one side, you will need to replace the whole zipper... this is kind of complicated and requires a zipper foot on your sewing machine... zipper foot looks like half a foot... if you are not a great sewer i'd take them to a tailor... this can be time consuming and frustrating the first time you do it... i've been doing it for 20 years and still hate it (although not as much as button holes .. lol)
if you only popped a seam and you have a sewing machine, run a new seam thru it and you should be fine... -

Re: I tore the fly on my favorite pair of jeans
Mon, August 21, 2006 - 12:20 PMI chickened out and took them to the cleaners to be repaired. They're only charging me $4.00 and I get to pick them up tonight. I hope they turn out ok. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. -

Mon, August 21, 2006 - 7:55 PMOMG! I don't care what's wrong with them. If you can get them fixed for $4, go for it! Spend the extra time you would have spent sewing designing, something fabulous for yourslef! You're SOOO not a chicken! You're a smart woman! -

Re: I tore the fly on my favorite pair of jeans
Tue, August 22, 2006 - 6:48 AMI got them back yesterday. The woman is a genius! My jeans look better than they did when I dropped them off.
Thank you Kathleen for supporting my $4.00 decision. You're right, I should spend the time designing something fun. :-) -

Re: I tore the fly on my favorite pair of jeans
Tue, August 22, 2006 - 11:00 PMOh, heck yeah! $4 for not having to bother? Tell me you don't burn up $4 worth of frustration just trying to thread a needle, I know I do. Or is it just time for me to get new glasses? Hehehehe.
I'm glad to hear you got your favorite jeans fixed with so little hassle. -

Re: I tore the fly on my favorite pair of jeans
Fri, September 1, 2006 - 5:26 PMOr every time your needle breaks? I think I invented new cusswords... I FINALLY had the $150.00 to get my good sewing machine fixed - no more broken needles using the crappy cheapie. Oh yeah, a piece of advice - buy the very best sewing machine you can afford, then maintain it. Mine's been going for over 25 years. May she work for 25 more!
