I know *how* to sew, and I know how to alter patterns with very little trouble. HOWEVER - I also know that my body type does not lend itself well to most patterns - at all. LOL.
Here's the situation:
I am getting married in June. I have, just now, decided that the dress I was *going* to wear for the wedding is NOT going to be comfortable enough for me to wear... It's a period elizabethan gown, and while it's lovely on me, I don't really relish the idea of wandering around all day in a corset - particularly a very TIGHT corset.
SO... I have some ideas for patterns. I need input. My body type is round... curvy, but round... I have a waist, but it's very short (read: 1" between bottom of ribs and top of hips), and I'm about 5'6", weighing about 260. I have som ideas for dresses, and I need to have people's in-put on which would be best for me...
Simplicity pattern # 4940, 4242, 4479,
Simplicity pattern # 5524 + McCalls pattern #M5196
McCalls pattern # M4997, M4997, M4378
I know that some of these will need to be altered, but that's not a big, huge issue - as long as I can get things settled within the next month or so, so I have time to pick fabric and get going on it. I'm *SO* not waiting until the last minute to make this.

Re: Second-guessing, and needing some advice...
Sun, November 26, 2006 - 6:31 AMopinions here.... i would stay away from simplicity 4479... that one will be an agrevation from the beginning... and although m4997 would be wonderful it would also be a bit much... you will have 100 things to do that will stress you out and working on this will make you hate the thing...
i would suggest that you work with mccalls m4378... looks very simple and easy to alter and would be lovely... or simplicity 4242... clean lines are easier to alter...

Re: Second-guessing, and needing some advice...
Sun, November 26, 2006 - 9:07 AMI mis-typed... It was 4478. LOL. I *definitely* wouldn't go for 4479. YUCK!
I do like the 4242, though it's not as "wedding-like" as I'd like to have...
As for McCalls - I really like the 4997.. I'm a sucker for floaty gowns... LOL... I do like the M4378, too, though.
Thanks for the opinions!

Sun, November 26, 2006 - 9:11 AMAlso, it was m4995, not a repeat of m4997... I was apparently *really* tired when I typed this up... LOL.

Re: Second-guessing, and needing some advice...
Sun, December 10, 2006 - 5:19 PM4995 has an inner boned bodice, which you may not want to deal with. Otherwise, it has no shape at all, just a pretty floaty cape on the back. You could go with the shape of 4378 and either change or eliminate the sleeve and add a circular ruffly capey thing on the back. You could even add a floaty sheer overskirt where the trim is added under the bust. It's such a simple clean shape, you could do a lot with it.
Thanks for showing me you can search patterns online! So much better than sitting in the fabric stoes and hauling around those dang books!
