I went to an actual Torrid store for the first time yesterday. (Stoneridge in Pleasanton, CA. I don't drive and it would be a big pain to take bart/bus out there, anyway, I digress...)
After drooling over stuff online for the past year or so, seeing the stuff up close was probably my biggest disappointment-- most of their clothes are crap! And terribly overpriced. And ill-fitting. But I can't complain too much since I got some really cute and not-too-cheesy things for a good deal from the clearance rack. (Yeah, I got the pink satin maryjanes for $3!) I also admit I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the garments are made in the USA.
I probably won't be going back, unless it's to check out a different store (most likely Tracy if I get the chance). It just seemed like a teenie-bopper/hoochie version of Lame Giant (er, Lane Bryant), a big corp ripping off fat girls everywhere that are desperate to have something cute/stylish to wear for once.
Anyone else have similar feelings?

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Mon, December 27, 2004 - 10:02 PMI have a love/hate relationship with Torrid.
The clothes are not worth paying full-price, but I appreciate that the stuff doesn't make me look matronly. I recommend the Torrid in the Valley Fair Mall in San Jose. The saleswomen are both big and small, but they make you feel normal (because you ARE!). Also, you can find some excellent sale items in the back (a la GAP).
In the end, I have been happy with the items that I've purchased (I'm even making a pattern out of one of the dresses). I just try to stay away from the supertrendy stuff that makes me look silly. -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Tue, December 28, 2004 - 12:16 PMI usually go to the one in Concord....I tend to not pay full price if I can at all help it...right now I am not impressed with the selection of clothes they have now ...but I hope their summer collection is better....I did manage to get some really cute stuff this last spring/summer. I tend to buy staple pieces skirts jeans etc....and only a few trendy type things.

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Fri, December 31, 2004 - 12:32 PMI really agree with Anne on this one. It does not make me look matronly (love) but the quality kind of sucks (hate). I just feel grateful there is a Lane Bryant alternative, and one that is sort of gothy-punk. As I posted before, I have done alterations to a few of the dresses, making them sturdier and prettier. Easier than sewing from scratch sometimes.

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Tue, December 28, 2004 - 3:51 PMHere here. Unfortunately the thing you must remember is that Torrid is the fat girl's Hot Topic. And you expected QUALITY?! It's mass-marketed trends for girls who can't find it elsewhere. Now and then I'll find a piece I can hope won't fall apart, but for the most part this smacks of the shops you see in Japan, insta-personality on a coat hanger at highly inflated prices.
Mostly what I stick to at Torrid is the occasional kitschy coat or socks, accessories are always great and now and then a pair of pants I don't plan to wear but to the club once or twice a month. It's an okay resource for "unique" items, but in the end it's likely best kept to people too trendy to care whether they're wearing poly too thin to last more than a few washes. -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, December 30, 2004 - 8:14 AMI've always reffered to it as Hot Topic for fat girls too. I will also say that since I cannot make it to a store I tend to shop online and only when they offer 50% off their clearance which they do once every month or two. If I am paying $10 for a pair of pants I don't get bent out of shape when they don't last very long. -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Tue, January 4, 2005 - 12:41 PMi have to say i really like torrid. too damn much, actually. as an alternative to department stores and lane bryant (lame giant hee hee! that's a good one) it works for me, given how i like to dress. and they offer shoes in larger sizes as well as boots that fit larger calves....a must for a gurl like me.
i usually pick through what is there to find pieces to supplement what have already. and the sales aren't bad at all. in fact that's when i think the clothes are most worth the money.
it is a fat girl's hot topic. i agree with that. but i'm more hot topic than liz claiborne.

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, January 6, 2005 - 6:35 PMI actually like torrid a lot.. but then I wear a lot of fetish clothing..and they are about teh only game giong in retail to buy plus sized clothing off the rack in a national chain.
Im sad that they are discontinuing thier fetish/goth line of clothing... the sales rep at the san jose store.. told me the fetish / goth stuff does great in Ca.. but nationwide it does poorly...
I would appreciate any info on other retail places that I can go in and try things on.. in Ca that sells fetish clothing in plus sizes..

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Fri, January 7, 2005 - 9:19 AMi would LOVE to love torrid, but their sizing sucks! nothing infuriates me more than something saying 4x that fits like a 2x....i will agree that they have terrific shoes sometimes cute jewelry, but the clothing line is the pits....i bought the cutest little pink dress with little skulls on it with little bows and i bought this online.... i was so excited when the package came, but the dress feels like it was made out of a thin tablecloth, trash!!! it wouldn't last one night out and i paid 40 bucks for it on clearance!!! BOO TORRID!!

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 11:42 AMYou might check out Size Appeal. I found out about them recently, and they look like they have a lot of cool stuff ("curvy skirt"). -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 10:00 PMi agree, size appeal is quite fun and great prices... however, i once had the opportunity to be in the size appeal warehouse after hours and as a 16/18 [at the time], everything i tried on was of such varying sizes, it was pretty frustrating! so, be careful, read the descriptions well, call and ask how the fit is on the line/product, and be prepared to return or exchange.

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Wed, May 4, 2005 - 3:34 PMI fully agree with the poster who said that the one in Valley Faire is the Torrid to go to. I went to the new one that opened in the Stonestown mall in SF and I was so disappointed. Actually, I was hoping to exchange a pair of pants someone had bought for me at the VF store, thinking it wouldn't be any problem (silly me!). The sales girl actually said to me that they didn't carry those styles here because Avril Lavigne was waning in popularity. I just stared at her.
Was she actually referencing Avril Lavigne to someone over 16?
She was incredibly condescending and so now I only shop Torrid when I happen to be in San Jose and have time to cruise Valley Faire.
As for Lane Bryant, I actually found some *really* cute stuff this weekend, but generally the only stuff I buy there are my bras and panties. They have the cutest panties ever and they're the only ones who carry my bra size.
But if anyone knows of another store that carries a 44B, please tell me. -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 1:37 PMWhen ever I have bought something from torrid it has fallen apart literally. Bad construction, Lane Bryant clothing I have had forever. Like years on jeans but there bras used to fall apart also, but now they are getiing better in quality. I wonder?? Great size selection, I too went shopping this weekend and they are cariing the infamous Saven jeans now in my size so you dont havet o be a zero to wear the same as the starletts but at $90 bucks a pop I dunno... -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 2:20 PMIs there spandex in the Saven brand? I've been searching and searching for a nice pair of jeans in my size without spandex in them. -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 7:12 PMI think a bit there are some styles with stretch and I oops miss spelled I meant Seven heehee. Some cute skirt styles too. They make your ass look like a dream though I suppose that is worth every penny! -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 7:18 PMDamn. See, that's the thing, the jeans with spandex seem to sag around the butt and nowhere else. I've been looking for a pair of jeans for months with no success. Found some great skirts, though. -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, July 14, 2005 - 7:52 PMTry to see all the styles may be different too. Not all may have spandex?

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, January 5, 2006 - 4:17 PMHave you tried Old Navy for jeans? Their women's line is the only place I've found that has jeans that aren't all out of proportion for me (5'6" - I wear a 20). I don't have much of a belly and Lane Bryant jeans all have this extra room in the front, so I end up looking all saggy. They have both stretch and non-stretch...and I have found both to be great.
We finally got a Torrid in my town (eugene OR) and I was pretty disappointed in their stuff. Seemed too expensive for low-quality gear. I'm glad I got a sewing machine for Christmas so I can make my own stuff. Cheers! -

Thu, January 5, 2006 - 7:53 PMI got a sewing machine for Christmas too! But it's still in the box. Haven't been back to Torrid since that day. What are you going to sew first? -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Mon, January 9, 2006 - 5:58 PMI promised I'd make some curtains for my old roomie and her husband (their Christmas present - their choice!). But after that, I'm thinking about some blouses for work. I have some cute "city" fabric (with buildings and people on it) and I'd like to use that.
I unpacked the sewing machine last night and tried it out. It's rad. :0) -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Fri, July 15, 2005 - 12:57 PMI have a love hate relationship with Torrid. I got a great white blouse and black pleated catholic school girl skirt there that I love. The prom dresses were cute.
But the pants, oy very bad. I was all excited when I saw the dickies pants thinking I could be a big girl rockabilly thing. Then I tried them on. Tight in the ass and the biggest uglliest bellbottom legs. I was like, Excuse me?!! All their pants fit funky. I don't know what is up. Do they even have people try these things on before mass marketing them?
I bounce between torrid and hot topic. The torrid store by my place seems to have good styles in. I walked by coming out of the theater and it was closed so I couldn't really shop. I too think it is over priced so I wait for things to go on sale cause I am a cheap ass. -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Tue, December 20, 2005 - 4:09 PMI was at my mall yesterday (Harlem & Irving Plaza -- Chicagoland) and low and behold, they opened at Torrid there three weeks ago. I wandered in and immediatly felt a little old, but I had been on the hunt for a cool pair of brown cord pants and I found them there. I normally wear size 22 in pants, but these were 20's. I picked up a few other things. Admittedly, there's no way I'll pay $26 for a t-shirt as thin as tissue paper that runs really small. But, I might go back to maybe get one of those gothic sequined black skirts for New Year's.

Sun, January 15, 2006 - 1:07 AMTorrid IS Hot Topic for fat girls. Literaly, it is owned by the company that runs Hot Topic.
Their clothes are so poorly made and they try chargeing 58.00 for jeans, it makes me so mad. -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Sat, June 24, 2006 - 9:57 PMThe best thing I ever got from Torrid, I actually bought in a Hot Topic store. My son was shopping for himself, I was hanging out (he didn't drive yet) and on a rack in the back of the store was a beautiful black gothic gown. I looked, cuz it was so nice - of course, I expected it to say Size 12 or something...imagine my surprise when it said 2X!! For $25.00!!! Bought it, love it, still (a few years later) go into my local Hot Topic....hoping.... -

Sun, January 29, 2006 - 9:41 AMever since they have gone to 'Cute with an edge'... I haven't shopped there too often. I like their shoes and their clearence rack but other than that... I wont shop there unless I need a last minute corset style top or something 'cute with an edge'. -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, April 20, 2006 - 12:14 PMI love torrid but they have changed a lot in the last 4 years. They used to have lots of cool t-shirts, but now its all glam stuff pretty much, I like the new stuff but I miss the old. Also they have gotten really expensive just like lane byant. Oh well its fun to go to the store and be able to try pretty much everything on since they actually have my size. And I like their sales.

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Fri, April 21, 2006 - 7:07 AMI have not bought anything in the store yet at 'Great Lakes Crossings mall', I have looked 3 times, not tried on anything. If the sizes run small, then it is a waste for me to even try stuff on.
I am thinking about sewing a FULL circle skirt tonight out of silk. Think I will practice on cheaper fabric first! Joann's etc. here I come!

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Tue, May 2, 2006 - 12:43 PMIsn't that why we sew? When you sew you can literally pick from thousands of fabrics and make any size you want. You can make it as sturdy as it needs to be. I believe in the buddy system. Find a sewing partner if you possibly can to help with the fitting and alterations and pinning up of hems and such. And once you get a pattern that fits you like a glove, make several items with it.
If you have a skirt or something you've worn out but the fit is great, carefully cut it apart and use it for a pattern.
I feel sorry for people that don't sew and have to put up with the garbage that malls crank out. The reason mass produced pants don't fit right is because we are all lumpy in different places. Get a good book on how to fit figure flaws and draft your own patterns.

I LOVE Torrid!
Mon, September 10, 2007 - 6:03 PMOMG I LOVE TORRID!
What is it that makes designers assume that all fat people should only wear legging sets with macrame and grandma-ish clothes!? I am so grateful for a store that finally makes me feel good about being young and fun, and yes, fat! I am not by any means a "Goth" personality and some of the stuff is a bit "teen-ish" but ultimately there are some great high mileage pieces such as work pants, dresses and jeans. Every body is different and things always fit different for each of us. Personally I would rather someone shoot me than to wear anything from The Giant! Even their lingerie is not very fun and it's like finding a needle in the haystack (for me) to find anything I might be able to work with there!
I may be a big girl but I am young, fun and sexy and Torrid is the ONLY Place I can go to find clothes which reflect that. As for the quality of the products I have to say that everything I have bought (which is my entire wardrobe by this point) has lasted wonderfully! There have been a few tops which didn't last so long, but I also make it a point to take advantage of their awesome clearance sales and coupon days! I try not to buy full price anywhere I go.
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, October 25, 2007 - 9:18 AMI know exactly how you feel. I bought what I thought was a reasonably priced blue sweater that had some nice detailing on the shoulder/sleeve area the other day. I go to put it on and as I'm pulling it down over me, my thumb goes right through and makes a hole. I am furious! I don't even want to bother bringing it back because I don't want to scream at the salespeople (because it's not really their fault). They do make cute stuff but the quality should at least match the price. -

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Fri, November 2, 2007 - 1:42 PMI'll have to admit that 1/3 of my wardrobe probably came from Torrid at one point or another. I've had pretty good luck with them, and when their clearance stuff is on sale for 50% off, you can get clothes for a steal. So far, I've had incredible luck with the demin by Paris Blues, Dickies, and Cavaricci. Their skinny jeans and bootlegs are the best fitting jeans I've been able to find for my body and the pencil skirts are to die for. I've had the aforementioned pieces for 2 seasons and they're still with me.
I picked up the pirate costume for Halloween. I ran that through the washer and dryer yesterday and it's still in one piece. Also, their boots, albeit cheap, are always wide enough for big-girl calves and while I wouldn't wear them every day, they're fun for dates and parties. If you like thermal tops . . . their thermal henleys rock. I've washed mine each at least twice and they are still alive.
Before you shop online, try to get into a store where you can touch the fabric and see if you approve. A lot of their stuff is really thin and cheap (stay away from the sweater dresses -- you'll be very disappointed). If you're not by a Torrid, e-mail me if you have questions about something. I have a Torrid near me and I visit it often enough to give you an inside scoop on nearly everything in there. :-) t

Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Sat, March 8, 2008 - 11:05 AMI am from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We have Ashley Stewart, Cato's, Catherine's, Rainbow, Simply Fashions. You all may want to check out those stores online. I am NOT a fan of Lane Bryant. Their jeans always make me look like I have Frankstein's legs and the Michelin man's stomach. They do nothing for my butt without nearly slicing me in half at the waist. There was a Torrid in New Orleans, but I didn't find out about it until after Katrina. However, I'm glad that I didn't since y'all say their clothes aren't really worth the price. -
-
Re: Disappointed in Torrid!
Thu, March 13, 2008 - 1:51 AMIt really does depend on what you are buying there I usually get my jeans there. I tend to wear lei or z cavarricci or dickies. Since those are the brands that fit me the best.
