Ok, so if we just give up and start wearing shapeless bags like kaftans and mumus, we will end up hating our looks even more. Or at least that's how I feel. I refuse to do shapeless, not as long as I'm still curvy. BUT, sometimes I get to wondering if a kaftan-type simple, light, airy garment in a gorgeous fabric might look nice with a wide sash, or perhaps a waist cincher - and be cool and comfortable. Has anyone here got any tried out this look, or am I about to embark on a frontier safari?

Mon, July 14, 2008 - 6:28 AMErr, "Has anyone here got any tried out this look, or am I about to embark on a frontier safari?" should be "Has anyone here tried out this look, or am I about to embark on a frontier safari?"
Sorry, not enough coffee yet. -

Re: kaftan opinions
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 6:52 AMif you're comfortable and confident in it, go for it. i myself have not tried it. i feel like i do not have a firm enough body shape for anything light and airy or shapeless. i would guess it would be similar to a wrap dress, in how flattering it would be. as long as it isnt so huge that it looks like your sheets got tangled on you, it would probably be good.
the only real danger is if you use the sash or wide belt on a dress like this you might end up looking segmented like an ant. yes it will make your waist look tiny, but it'll make your butt/hips look GINOURMUS by comparison.
also, go for rich looking fabrics, and avoid anything that resembles a party tablecloth or a pre-teens bedspread. i think if you avoid those types of horrible stereotypical styles, it should look okay.
oh, and kaftans can be stylish, if you take the time to do your hair, put on complimenting jewlry, etc... its just that most women who wear those style dresses have either given up, or go WAY overboard (i saw a woman with really bad 80's makeup last week.. think mimi bobek)
my aunt has a leopard print kaftan that she wears over black leggings and a black tank top, and it is adorable. she is a big lady, and she manages the look without resembling a.. what.. a jellyfish? i cant think of a decent example.

Re: kaftan opinions
Mon, July 14, 2008 - 8:26 AMWind, you have a lovely shape and should show it off. The tunic you're wearing in your avatar pic is something like a caftan. Think about that kind of thing. I'd say, make it fit your bust and flow from there, without being too full. I'll post a picture of a dress I made from a top pattern that I made longer. I'm not the biggest fan of the fabric, but the cut is okay. Personally, the thing I'll never wear is a mu-mu, because my mom never wore anything else because she hated her body. If I lived in Hawaii, I'd get over it, but I don't!

Re: kaftan opinions
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 4:13 AMI think if the pattern and design was right it would look very much like a galabaya. Especially if you did a hip wrap rather than a waist cincer.

Re: kaftan opinions
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 7:10 AMYeah, I like the idea of a hip wrap. That would look awesome. I think you can wear anything as long as you wear it with confidence and don't just wear it to hide yourself. Make it with some gorgeous fabrics and be sure to post pics when you're done! -

Re: kaftan opinions
Tue, July 15, 2008 - 10:55 PMThank you all so much for your thoughts. What I am taking away from this is that I want to try belting it either above or below the waist - empire style or hip wrap.
On a slightly different note, I am also pondering ways to combine a good stout halter-top with a sarong skirt/dress
