I'm new to the group and I'm hoping someone can help me.

Does anyone know where I might find a Plus sized prairie dress pattern?

I'm looking for a dress like the ladies of that polygamist sect are wearing - the ones in the news lately because their ranch is being raided (FLDS sect).

It's a long dress, rounded collar, long sleeves (or can be shorter sleeves). I found someting not quite like it, but it was a costume pattern and it only went up to size 20. I'm looking for a 26 or a 28.

It's not really an Amish or Mennonite dress, either. I've looked at those, too, and they're not quite what I'm looking for.

Any links or suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
After drooling over stuff online for the past year or so, seeing the stuff up close was probably my biggest disappointment-- most of their clothes are crap! And terribly overpriced. And ill-fitting. But I can't complain too much since I got some really cute and not-too-cheesy things for a good deal from the clearance rack. (Yeah, I got the pink satin maryjanes for $3!) I also admit I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the garments are made in the USA.
I probably won't be going back, unless it's to check out a different store (most likely Tracy if I get the chance). It just seemed like a teenie-bopper/hoochie version of Lame Giant (er, Lane Bryant), a big corp ripping off fat girls everywhere that are desperate to have something cute/stylish to wear for once.
Anyone else have similar feelings?

Do any of you sew with a dress form? I got spoiled at school with a Wolf Form and I want one for home. I hate the adjustible forms, and I've had a duct tape form too, but I'm just not gonna go there again. So I'm thinking I'll either buy a professional (wolf style) form and customize it with something like this: http://www.fabulousfit.com/fitting_system.html - though I called them and the information I got about it working with a size 18 form wasn't promising - or, a Uniquely You (http://store.atlantathread.com/largedressform.html) which I am also unsure would be big enough to fit me.

Any experience with either of these customization systems?

I am getting married again and am making my own dress because I am NOT going to spend $1,000 on a dress again just to donate it to Goodwill, I hate spending $350 for a white mother-of-the-bride dress, I want something simple and light (Sept 1st wedding in Boston so it will be hot) and I've been sewing since 7th grade!

I would gladly pay good money for someone else's castoff in order to get the bodice right, but really would hate to pay full price ($129 to $240) at Joann's or Fabric Place.

Any advice or anyone willing to give up on their dress form? I doubt I could make one out of duct tape and foam.

Does anyone else get this? Or can I give a heads up on a great resource for plus sewers?

I've been getting Burda's european magazines on and off for a few years. I've gotten both the "Burda World of Fashion" and the "Burda PLUS Fashion". "World of Fashion" has mainly regular sized patterns, but also has a small plus collection each month. They are great magazines for intermediate and more experienced sewers. The often have 50-70 patterns inside the magazine. A years subscription (2 issues) to the plus magazine is only $15 us a year.

The magazine also has excellent tutorials on fit or finishing techniques, like how to petite size clothes, or how to work on leather. The clothes are by european designers with great lines and often a year or two ahead of "what's in" in the US.

The patterns are printed on template sheets bound in the middle of the magazine, Printed without seam allowences (which is why I do not recommend it for beginners), the rest of the magazine is sewing instruction and views of the patterns. All patterns must be traced from the multisize templates and given seam allowences, which is an extra step, but well worth it for some of the wonderful garments I've found here.

Go to their magazine section, there are links to both World of Fashion and Plus Fashion. You can see all the patterns online including a technical drawing that shows the seam lines.

If you want to buy them in the US the easiest way is though this link.

http://www.glpnews.com/EN/Crafts/ListCatSewing1.html

They can also be bought through Amazon.

I know *how* to sew, and I know how to alter patterns with very little trouble. HOWEVER - I also know that my body type does not lend itself well to most patterns - at all. LOL.

Here's the situation:

I am getting married in June. I have, just now, decided that the dress I was *going* to wear for the wedding is NOT going to be comfortable enough for me to wear... It's a period elizabethan gown, and while it's lovely on me, I don't really relish the idea of wandering around all day in a corset - particularly a very TIGHT corset.

SO... I have some ideas for patterns. I need input. My body type is round... curvy, but round... I have a waist, but it's very short (read: 1" between bottom of ribs and top of hips), and I'm about 5'6", weighing about 260. I have som ideas for dresses, and I need to have people's in-put on which would be best for me...

Simplicity pattern # 4940, 4242, 4479,
Simplicity pattern # 5524 + McCalls pattern #M5196
McCalls pattern # M4997, M4997, M4378

I know that some of these will need to be altered, but that's not a big, huge issue - as long as I can get things settled within the next month or so, so I have time to pick fabric and get going on it. I'm *SO* not waiting until the last minute to make this.

2) a gown based (NOT copied from) a nicole miller gown I've seen advertised

To support this effort, we're having a costume swap in Oakland August 12, and are looking for donations of outfits/costumes.

I'm creating a separate posting on this tribe, because we would like to have as much stuff on hand as possible in larger sizes. We want to serve everyone, and not just have stuff for small people, which we know we'll get.

Even if you can't attend the swap (and we hope you can), we will gladly take any donations of costumes, fancy outfits, etc. that you can provide, until we leave for the festival.

Fat and Active - a social club for active plus-sized people (and friends) of all ages, genders and sexual orientations. ALL sizes and fitness levels welcomed!

Don't know about you, but I weigh 330lb and LOVE to be physically active - hiking, canoeing, short and long urban walks, ballroom dancing, club dancing, playing tennis, playing volleyball, going to the gym, you name it! Now that summer is officially here, I'm ready to go out and have some active fun - at a pace that won't kill me. LOL But that pace is usually boring to the very fit people in my life!!! So, I've been venturing out on my own...but you know? It’s always nicer if it's also a social event! That's where you come in! :-)

Care to join me? Drop me a line; tell me a bit about why you want to join the group!

PLEASE NOTE - This is NOT a weight-loss group. Our focus as a group is to connect with other fat people who have, or who desire to have, a more physically active social life. Some of us, individually, might be on a path of losing weight and may have chosen to eat in a particular way but we are NOT, as a group, a weight-loss or diet group. This is NOT an anti-dieting list either. Some of us might be staunch anti-dieters and fat-activists but this is NOT an anti-dieting list. Some of us could very well be both fat-positive and actively working on dropping weight and eating in a particular way and see no contradiction inherent in that way of thinking. Regardless of where you fall in the complex, muddled soup that is Fat Politics, you are welcomed here as long as you treat everyone with respect, kindness and openness.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: First order of business is a nature hike in the East Bay scheduled for June 11th at 9:00 Am. Other locations to include San Francisco, as well as South and North Bay.

Your ideas and suggestions for activities are welcomed!

Then I used E-beads and made my own fringe on the bottom. On the ends of each fringe I put (not sure of the name for them) those little clamshell looking india things you see on lots of broomstick skirts that have their own little jingly sound.
I made it big enough I can use it at the waist, on the hips or even over one shoulder like - Is it called a bandelero? At any rate, I wore it to lots of renaissance festivals once upon a time.

In simplicity patterns I have been making about a 30.
But to the person who started the size roll call -you mentioned fitting issues.
And when patterns are made bigger "all over" as they tend to be when they are up-sized,
there are definite fitting issues.
For me, I have to move the darts lower or maybe even add an inch of length to the chest, because as most of you know, the full figured female is not the "B cup" that the size 12 pattern was upsized from, as well as the fact that when you are larger in the chest, gravity will make it "unperky"
quicker. But that isn't too major of an adjustment.
The hips of these patterns are NEVER the same size, and I find that a big annoying to have to stop and measure every time. It seems like that should be more standard.
But I guess the most frustrating thing in the adjustments to me, is when the back is really huge and wide. Half the time it seems like you need to take a couple of inches out in a center back seam to make the thing not huge in back. I just don't have "fat shoulderblades". LOL.
And of course, taking a seam in the center back affects the visual style of the pattern and isn't a great option generally. Still, I am always hesitant to take that out of the center of the pattern on the fold BEFORE I cut.
I use a standard dritz adjustable dress form.
If I were smaller, I would crank the front out to a fuller dimension and adjust the back narrower, but the chest is alread about at its widest setting.
At any rate - yes - there are DEFINITE fitting issues for the plus size sewist.

The website claims you can input your size and print a pattern adjusted to your size. We all know how fat girls bodies are not just larger copies of skinny girls patterns; there are special adjustments we need to fit our contours. Predictably, I am a bit reluctant to spend the money and try using these patterns unless this CD is "smart" enough to make dart placement alterations, etc. for fuller figures.

I HATE all the clothes I see in the stores and don't have very good stores where I live. The clothes are all either too young and trendy or too dowdy. I guess I'm going to have to start sewing again! I sent away for a book on full-figure fashion basics and will need to just get my hiney sewing! I'm good at pattern design and manipulation, I just need some good IDEAS! Professional, yet not too stuffy with a bit of the arty mixed in.

Two questions: 1) Where to go for design inspiration? 2) What's a good, reliable, not too expensive serger. I have an older Bernina sewing machine that needs a tune-up, but no serger. I sewed on industrial machines for years and never had to have my own machine!

I wonder if anyone has ever done a plus size version of this?

Made of crisp pima cotton tan/black, each of the cotton weaves has a bit of lycra for that comfy fit! This shirt has a crisp snap to it even without starch. Has gorgeous matching buttons and convenient breast pocket. Front placket is self-lined, no show-through on the tan fabric. All seams are French.

Hand-sewn, the fabric was prewashed before cutting, and sewn and stored in a 100% smoke-free environment.

It looks much like this, but of better quality: http://www.daddyos.com/retro/sret.html

This shirt is worth $125 in boutiques, but am willing to make a deal if you know someone who could use it. It is killing me to see it here, when I know someone could use it... does your big guy like to dress for holidays? Got a special new years celebration planned? I bet he would look gorgeous in this!
I subscribe to the Title Nine sportswear catalog, and just dream of being able to find great sportswear like this in my size. Example: http://www.title9sports.com/jump.jsp?itemType=CATEGORY&itemID=5

I know that if I shop around, I find some similar fashion versions of these clothes, but I want real clothes that do the work of sports while looking good.

Meanwhile, if I want to sew these things myself, where am I going to find these fabrics? And the technical notions? Sometimes I can find great bottomweight jersey knit for easy pull-on sweatpants, but I never find cool fabric to make stripes down the sides, or the right elastics that don't roll or pull or bunch... And I love those great crispy pants that have a sueded cotton finish, many patch pockets at the knees and hem, lots of top-stitching, and the cotton has a "touch of spandex"... now where am I going to find that fabric?

And I live in Los Angeles, where supposedly "you can find any fabric!" in the garment district... but have not found much.

If anything, this catalog makes me want to workout so that I can reduce down to these sizes... But seriously, I want to wear these clothes *now*

Where I'm at: I'd like to do this first or second week of October. I don't really want to step on anyone's toes by issuing invites, but I can only comfortably host 4-6 people for a swap depending on how much you've got, and I'd like to have some kind of potluck as well. I'm hosting in Oakland, close to 880/580, and right on a bart-connected bus line.
What I need to know:
-What dates work for you
-What's your level of interest/commitment
-How much stuff you have to trade (ie # of garbage bags or boxes full), and what size range
-What you might be able to contribute for food
-If anyone is willing to drop off rejects at Goodwill/Salvation Army
-other ideas I might have forgotten
Please post replies to this thread, as it's easier for me to keep track of. Thanks!

we are probably all around the same size range... that is, straddling between the generous XXLs we find at low-end stores and sometimes even too small for the smallest at Avenue and Lane Bryant [come on, who needs armholes that big on a tshirt? i like to wear my tops tight--to show off the goods--not have the bottom of the armhole at my waistline!] ...

OTOH, aren't we lucky that this is a new era where plus sizes are more readily available and sometimes an XL is like an 18w [gotta love Old Navy XL for that!]? I have a niece who wears the cutest clothes to high school and I remember how I wore boys jeans because girls jeans just rarely came in those sizes. How I envied the girls in Dittos in high school...

ok, basically this thread is just a rant about clothes, sizing, and available fashions in our size... carry on!
